This week will focus on two events that caused great fear and uncertainly in the United States. The Cuban Missile Crisis, and Start of the Vietnam War. As always you can complete daily assignments in your notebook, or print copies of any notes/questions. Have a great week!
Monday May 18th:
As the Cold War began to spread, Duck and Cover, an educational film produced by the Federal Civil Defense Administration, showed children how to react in case of a nuclear attack. The Soviet Union had tested its first nuclear bomb in 1949 and fear of an attack in the United States was high. As a result, Congress created the Federal Civil Defense Administration in 1950 to prepare America for emergencies. Two of the organization’s more visible contributions were public fallout shelters and the Emergency Broadcast System. Educational films such as this one were popular in the 1950s. They were used to teach life skills to students across the country in a uniform way. Duck and Cover taught children to hide under a desk or against a wall and cover their neck and face for safety during a nuclear attack. It was first screened on January 7, 1952, as part of the Alert America civil defense exhibit convoy in Washington DC. Two weeks later, it was shown to school officials in New York City, and it debuted in the classroom on March 6, 1952.
You will be watching a clip of the video shown to school children and complete the reflection questions after.

Friday May 22nd:
In honor of memorial day this is an interesting video of the design and symbolism of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC. It shows the powerful symbolism behind what seems to be a simple design, and will provide you with insight of the war that we are about to dive into.
The second video is titled "Not Forgotten." It tells the story of an American widow who finds the closure she's been seeking for more than forty years when her MIA Marine husband’s identification tags and wedding ring are recovered in Vietnam.
